Turnovers Cost Mercer in Loss to Western Carolina

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University football team dropped a 35-21 decision to Western Carolina on Saturday
evening at Mercer University Stadium.

The Bears (5-3, 1-3 SoCon) were hurt early by turnovers, as two costly fumbles helped WCU race out to a 21-3 advantage in the second quarter. Mercer used a fumble recovery of its own to trim the deficit at halftime, as Alex Lakes capitalized on the turnover with a nine-yard touchdown to pull within 21-10 at the break.

Western Carolina added two more touchdowns in the second half to pull away, before John Russ’ 26-yard touchdown pass to Josh Jones rounded out the scoring.

Russ completed 13 of 25 passes for 199 yards and score, while Lakes led the Bears on the ground with 125 yards rushing on 21 carries and a touchdown.

Mercer will be back in action next Saturday, when it travels to Chattanooga for a 12 p.m. kick-off.
