The Reedy Creek Improvement District was created in 1967 by the Reedy Creek Improvement Act, passed in 1967 at the request of Walt Disney.
The Reedy Creek Improvement District had the power of a government entity but was not bound by the same rules and regulations as other government bodies. In 2023, the Florida governor was granted the power to appoint board members, replacing the previously elected Board of Supervisors, which consisted of five members chosen by landowners through a democratic process.
