Mercer Football Receives Votes in The Sports Network’s FCS Poll

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University football team received 20 votes in the latest installment The Sports Network FCS Top 25 Poll, after last Saturday’s 49-0 dismantling of Stetson.

This week’s recognition marks the first time in program history that the Bears have received votes in the national poll, as they are one of six teams from the Southern Conference to be mentioned in The Sports Network Top 25 poll.

Mercer controlled the game from the onset in its victory over Stetson. The Bears compiled over 500 yards of total offense, led by the Southern Conference Freshman of the Week, Alex Lakes, who ran for 151 yards and three touchdowns in the game. The defense pitched its first shutout of the year, as the team forced five turnovers in the contest including a fumble recovery on the opening kick-off of the game.

Three-time defending national champion North Dakota State earned 146 first-place votes to remain No. 1, while Eastern Washington and Southeastern Louisiana rounded out the top three.

Mercer returns home this Saturday, September 20, for a 6 p.m. contest against Ave Maria.
