Mets to retire David Wright’s No. 5

The New York Mets will retire David Wright’s No. 5, and he will enter the Mets Hall of Fame in a pre-game ceremony on Saturday, July 19, before the 4:10 p.m. game against the Cincinnati Reds.

Wright will become the eighth player in franchise history to have his number retired by the Mets, joining Tom Seaver (41), Mike Piazza (31), Jerry Koosman (36), Keith Hernandez (17), Willie Mays (24), Dwight Gooden (16) and Darryl Strawberry (18). In addition, the Mets have retired three other numbers, including Manager Gil Hodges (14), Manager Casey Stengel (37) and Jackie Robinson (42).

Wright will join Seaver as the only players to have their number retired and enter the Mets Hall of Fame on the same day.

“Excited, humbled, honored are just some of the words to describe the thought of this summer’s Mets Hall of Fame induction and seeing #5 up at Citi Field next to some of the best players to ever play the game,” Wright said in a statement. “A big thank you to Steve and Alex Cohen and the entire Mets organization for this surreal honor.

“I can’t quite put into words the appreciation I have for the city of New York and Mets fans,” Wright added. “For 15 years I felt like I had 40,000 friends and family members in the stands each night. It was an honor of a lifetime taking the field as your Captain and I truly feel like this honor is just as much yours as it is mine.”

The Mets selected Wright as the 38th overall pick in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft out of Hickory High School (VA). He made his major league debut on July 21, 2004, vs. Montreal at Shea Stadium.

In 2013, he was named the fourth captain in franchise history. Wright would play his entire career with the Mets. His farewell game was on September 29, 2018 vs. Miami.
