D3 recap: Centre, Hendrix, DePauw win in week seven

Heath Haden threw for 270 yards and a touchdown too as Centre College exploded for 27 points in the second half to defeat Sewanee: The University of the South by a 34-17 margin at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.

Trailing 10-7 at halftime, Centre (5-1) scored 20 points in the third quarter to wrestle the lead from Sewanee (2-5). Harry Meisner rushed for 73 yards to lead the Colonels ground attack, which ran for 211 yards on the afternoon.

In Conway, Ark., Tanner Frye threw for 229 yards and three touchdowns as Hendrix College defeated Berry College by a 30-17 margin.

In a battle of upstart programs, Hendrix (3-3) picked off Berry (1-6) four times to stymie the Vikings. Berry closed the gap to 23-17 with 12:27 remaining in the fourth quarter, but could not manage to pull any closer.

Berry, which has found rhythm in its rushing game in recent weeks, out-rushed Hendrix by a 178 to a 160-yard margin.

In Delaware, Ohio, Nikko Sansone rushed for 200 yards and a touchdown as DePauw University (2-4) upset Ohio Wesleyan University (3-3) by a 23-21 margin.

In Birmingham, Ala., Mike Barthelemy rushed for 264 yards and four touchdowns as Millsaps College (6-0) knocked off Birmingham-Southern University (3-3) by a 28-14 margin.

In Ewing, N.J., Chris Spellman threw for 190 yards and three touchdowns as The College of New Jersey (4-2) edged past Morrisville State College (3-3) by a 21-20 score.

In Crawfordsville, Ind., Michael Putko passed for 217 yards and three touchdowns as Wabash College (6-0) cruised to victory over Kenyon College (4-3) by a 48-7 margin.

In Columbus, Ohio, the University of Mount University (6-0) rolled past Capital University (1-5) by a 58-3 margin.

In this week’s American Football Coaches Association Division III poll, The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater jumped to No. 5 from No. 7 last week. Meanwhile, the top four remained the same: No. 1 Mount Union, No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor (6-0), No. 3 Linfield (5-0) and No. 4 North Central (6-0).
