National Parks waive fees for National Park Week

ATLANTA — This weekend and next week is the time to take advantage of a National Park.

The National Park Service is waiving entrance fees at national parks April 21-29 for National Park Week. The week is part of 17 days in 2012 that feature free entry into National Parks; future fee free dates for 2012 are June 9 for Get Outdoors Day; Sept. 29 for National Public Lands Day; and Nov. 10-12 for Veterans Day weekend.

“America’s national parks have something for everyone,” National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis said in a news release. “Take a break and experience something new, enjoy some fresh air, get some exercise, and see where history happened. And, since admission is free to all 397 parks, all week long, National Park Week is a great time to get up, get out, and explore a park.”

Park entrance fees at the parks that charge fees generally range from $3 to $25. National Parks in Georgia that normally have fees include the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area in Augusta, the Cumberland Island National Seashore in St. Marys, Fort Frederica National Monument on St. Simons Island and Fort Pulaski National Monument in Savannah.

“This is our annual celebration of America’s best idea – our national parks,” Neil Mulholland, president and CEO of the National Park Foundation, said in a news release. “We are proud to stand with our partners at the National Park Service and encourage people everywhere to enjoy, learn from and support our nation’s greatest treasures.”
