Greg “Fingers” Taylor may not have set out to be a solo artist and is perhaps best known as the original Coral Reefer Band member, but his solo albums left an indelible mark on the modern blues scene.

A little over 25 years ago, I crossed the threshold and stepped into a Meijer in Newark, Ohio, shortly after midnight on September 30, 1997. I was about to buy what I quickly discovered was a Bob Dylan Masterpiece: “Time Out of Mind.”

In driving recently from Tulsa to Plano, Texas, I looked at a map to see how far out of the way Okemah, Oklahoma, the hometown of folk singer Woody Guthrie, was. It turned out that it wasn’t too far out of the way, making it the perfect sidetrack.
