Colón to retire as a New York Met on Sept. 17

RHP Bartolo Colón will officially retire as a member of the Mets on Sunday, Sept. 17, during a press conference before the 1:40 p.m. game vs. Cincinnati.

The first 15,000 fans attending the game will receive a Bartolo Colón “Big Sexy” long-sleeve shirt.

“I played with a lot of teams during my career but playing for the Mets was very special to me,” Colón said in a release on the team’s website. “The fans treated me great and I can’t wait to celebrate my career with them on September 17.”

Colón pitched with the Mets from 2014-2016 and was a 2015 National League championship team member.

In Queens, he went 44-34 with a 3.90 ERA (255 ER/588.2 IP) in 98 games, including 95 starts. He belted one memorable home run on May 7, 2016, in San Diego off James Shields, and in doing so, became the oldest player (42 years, 349 days) to hit his first major league home run.

Former Mets Manager Terry Collins, whom Colón played for all three years in Queens, will also attend the press conference.
