Georgia Southern claims Sun Belt championship

Georgia Southern knocked off Louisiana-Monroe by a 22-16 on Saturday to complete an 8-0 record in the Sun Belt and claim the conference championship in their season competing at the Football Bowl Subdivision level.

The Eagles (9-3) ran for 333 yards and relied on 13 fourth quarter points in the win before a crowd of 16,283 fans at Paulson Stadium in Statesboro, Ga. The Eagles are not bowl eligible, but could see a bowl bid if the Sun Belt doesn’t have enough bowl-eligible enough teams to fulfill the conference’s bowl obligations.

Georgia Southern nearly picked off a pair of major programs — in week one at NC State and in week three at Georgia Tech. The Eagles also picked up their 300th football win in program history, in a 69031 win over Georgia State on Oct. 25.
