Whispering Pines: Live at the Getaway

Whispering Pines: Live at the Getaway is a live album by Canadian singer Richard Manuel, capturing two intimate performances at The Getaway, a nightclub in Saugerties, New York, on October 12, 1985.

Released in Japan in March 2002, this recording marks Manuel’s first solo release. Unlike his former Band members, Manuel never recorded a traditional solo album, making this live performance a rare and treasured piece of his musical legacy.

The album features Manuel’s soulful renditions of Ray Charles classics and songs he famously performed with The Band. He is accompanied by fellow Band members Rick Danko and Jim Weider and harmonica player Sredni Vollmer, adding depth to the intimate set.

A 2005 re-release on the Canadian label Other People’s Music expanded the album with four additional tracks. This version does not include the alternate take of “Georgia On My Mind” that closed the original release.

It instead includes three “Piano Quickies.” The fourth bonus track is a unique jam session featuring Manuel’s dog, Mitzi, playfully contributing her “vocals” over a blues line.

Whispering Pines is a unique view of Manuel’s artistry, offering fans a rare glimpse into his solo performances.
