The Band released their sixth studio album, Northern Lights-Southern Cross, in 1975.
Critics consider the album a significant milestone as it was the first time they recorded at their new California studio, Shangri-La, and the first album with all-new material since Cahoots in 1971. The Band used a 24-track tape recorder to record this album, allowing keyboardist Garth Hudson to add numerous layers of keyboards to several tracks.
