The Hashknife Pony Express Monument in Scottsdale, Arizona, commemorates the modern revival of one of the American West’s best-known traditions.
Sculptor Herb Mignery created the bronze sculpture, which was commissioned through the Scottsdale Public Art Program to mark the Hashknife Pony Express’ 50th anniversary in 2008. It depicts two Pony Express riders meeting in a moment that emphasizes both movement and connection.
Arizona’s Hashknife Pony Express began in 1958 and continues an annual relay carrying U.S. mail on horseback from Holbrook to Scottsdale, a distance of about 200 miles. The ride recalls the original Pony Express, which operated beginning in 1860, while creating a distinctly Arizona tradition that has endured for decades.
