Ohio History Connection closed through 2030 as part of overhaul

(Sightseers’ Delight) — The Ohio History Connection is launching the final phase of its Campus 2.OH initiative, meaning its museum will remain closed to the public through 2030.

However, essential services — including public access to records at the Archives & Library by appointment, provided at the Ohio History Center — along with programs at Ohio Village and the other 50-plus Ohio History Connection sites across the state, will not be interrupted during the rehabilitation project.

Officials said the update will transform the facility’s museum to welcome visitors for the next 50 years. Work on the Ohio History Center has already started and is funded primarily by a $58 million capital-budget appropriation from the Ohio General Assembly for fiscal years 2027 and 2028.

The Ohio History Center houses the headquarters and most staff members for the Ohio History Connection, as well as the organization’s flagship museum, the Ohio State Archives & Library and the State Historic Preservation Office. The Ohio History Connection will also continue to oversee history services on behalf of Ohioans at our 50-plus sites all over the state, including the newly renovated Ohio Village, which soon will have enhanced year-round programming while work is done on the Ohio History Center.

In addition, we plan to expand programming at Ohio Village and with local arts partners, along with increased streaming offerings such as online talks, podcasts and construction webcams. Items from our vast museum collection will also “hit the road” at various times through 2030, extending opportunities to view artifacts and hear from history experts at locations across the state.

The Ohio History Center project is the final component of the comprehensive Campus 2.OH redevelopment plan that the Ohio History Connection began in 2022 with the start of construction on the Collections Care Center, which was completed in 2024. The Ohio Village will reopen in full in Spring 2027 following its revitalization.
