Florida Keys sheriff says no changes after Cuba-related rumors spread online

The sheriff of the Florida Keys spent part of Sunday tamping down speculation tied to online reports claiming Cuba may have taken military action involving drones near the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay.

In a Facebook post, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Sheriff Rick Ramsay has not been contacted by federal or state agencies about any threat tied to the reports and has not ordered any operational changes for deputies or detention staff.

The statement stopped short of validating the underlying claims, and the agency said it could not confirm the reports, determine their origin, or substantiate the information circulating online.

That matters in the Florida Keys, where proximity to Cuba has long made international flare-ups a local concern, whether justified or not. Rumors involving Cuba or Guantanamo Bay tend to spread quickly in Monroe County, especially on social media, where speculation can outrun facts in minutes.

Ramsay’s message was essentially this: nobody has called, nobody has asked for changes, and residents should not assume online chatter equals a real-world emergency.

“I am monitoring the situation, but I have not been contacted by any government agency and I don’t believe there is any reason to be concerned,” Ramsay said.
