New Jersey Assemblyman John Azzariti Jr. called the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner a “wake-up call” for leaders, the media and political figures across the country to immediately dial back the toxic rhetoric that is fueling anger and violence.
A gunman armed with multiple weapons attempted to breach security at the Washington Hilton during Saturday night’s event, prompting a rapid response from law enforcement and the evacuation of attendees, which included President Donald Trump.
“This should be a wake-up call for everyone,” Azzariti, R-Bergen, said. “The media, certain Democrats and others have been complicit in creating a climate of constant outrage and hostility. That kind of chronic, hateful discourse has consequences. When people are pushed to the edge by nonstop division and demonization, it can lead to violence. We must tone it down immediately.”
Azzariti noted the attack occurred in a room filled with Americans from all political perspectives, including Republicans and Democrats, conservatives and liberals, gathered for a longstanding tradition meant to celebrate free speech.
“This wasn’t a partisan space. It was a cross-section of our democracy,” he said. “And yet even there, violence found a way to show its ugly head. That should concern every one of us, regardless of party.”
He also pointed to a broader pattern of threats and attempts against elected officials at all levels of government.
“We’ve seen rising threats against state lawmakers and public officials across the country,” Azzariti said. “We need to get back to honest, thoughtful discourse, with respect for process, for differing opinions, and for the rule of law. That’s the only way we restore a sense of order and safety in our political system.”
