SMYRNA, Georgia — City officials are mulling a plan to spend more than $10 million to buy a 13-acre site that formerly was home to a hospital, according to reports.
The Marietta Daily Journal reported that the city wants to redevelop the Emory University Hospital site along South Cobb Drive. This move follows one by brokers representing the hospital, who pitched a plan to build 500 to 600 apartments on the property.
“We want a destination, we want something everybody can be proud of,” the newspaper quoted Mayor Derek Norton as saying. The redevelopment could include pickleball courts and other sports amenities targeting families per the report.
Apartments have been a contentious subject in the city. Some residents say the area is overbuilt, and more apartments add more traffic to local roads that can’t handle the additional vehicles.
Smyrna has been on a spending spree, using taxpayer money to buy the First Baptist Church site downtown and a former Georgia Power building on Concord Road.
