LaGuardia Airport in New York City could have the most flight cancellations during the last four months of 2024, followed by Denver International Airport and Orlando International Airport.
According to a recent analysis, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is projected to rank seventh, and John F. Kennedy International in New York City should also join the top 10.
More than 48,000 departing flights were canceled in the first half of 2024. Data analysts from Pilot John International reviewed flight cancellation patterns from the past five years, focusing on the peak travel months of September through December, to forecast cancellation trends for 2024.
The team analyzed data on canceled departing flights from September through December for 2019-2023 to determine which U.S. airports will have the most cancellations by the end of the year. The team then projected cancellation numbers for 2024.
At Hartsfield-Jackson, the world’s busiest airport, cancellations have averaged 604 per year over the last five years. In 2024, projections suggest this number could rise to 735 cancellations, particularly affecting travel during high-traffic periods like Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
