Fulton County Sheriff’s Office arrests reckless driver after pursuit

ATLANTA — The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Support Team (F.A.S.T.) has arrested a 27-year-old Chicago man following a pursuit.

Authorities charged Jimmy Kendal Smith with several misdemeanors and a felony, including battery-family violence, criminal trespass and damage to property, reckless driving, driving-fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, willful obstruction of law enforcement officers, and three counts of driving-hit and run. Smith is currently in the Fulton County Jail.

On Thursday, while traveling on I-75 southbound in Atlanta, Sheriff’s Investigator J. Moore saw a Toyota Camry making erratic lane changes and driving recklessly. Moore attempted to stop the car, but the driver hit other cars to escape. The vehicle was pursued until a successful “PIT maneuver” was performed on Capitol Avenue near the Georgia State Capitol.

Georgia Department of Public Safety Capitol Police aided by pinning the suspect’s car once it came to a stop.

“I cannot say enough how proud I am of our team. They have proven to be in the right place at the right time, time and time again,” Sheriff Patrick “Pat” Labat said in a release. “This reckless driver was putting lives in jeopardy and thanks to the quick actions of Inv. Moore, he was taken into custody without anyone being hurt. The FCSO law enforcement units on the streets of Fulton County serve as a force-multiplier to municipal law enforcement, keeping the citizens safe.”
