Shaun Black, Client Services Director at PTX Tech, a data services firm, is one of five candidates vying for the Ward 6 post in Smyrna.
He has lived in Smyrna sin 2004.
Alexander Backry, Tim Gould, Idella Moore and Brant Suddath also qualified. Early voting for the May 22 election begins on April 30.
The winner succeeds Doug Stoner, who stepped down in February to run for the state’s Public Service Commission.
What are the biggest issues facing Smyrna (and specifically Ward 6)?
Over the last few years Smyrna has experienced tremendous growth, and as such must manage change in order to position itself for the future. Issues involving zoning are important in making sure the City is growing the right way, not just the quickest way – because the influx of new residents means big changes to school population, traffic, and many other areas. One of the biggest issues for any city is making sure the local public schools are getting the support they need. While the curriculum and facilities are operated by the Cobb County School Board, the City has tremendous influence and has the ability to support the schools in many ways.
Why should voters cast a ballot for you?
I am the only candidate who not only supports our local public schools, I send my kids to them. I support them from the inside and see first hand every day what their needs are. In my professional life I have had many years of experience in customer relations and am well versed in conflict resolution and coming up with innovative solutions and compromises.
What legislation or initiatives do you plan on pursuing as a council member?
Communication needs to be one of the most important initiatives for any elected official. I plan on using technology to engage more constituents, through opening up frequent town-halls to things such as Facebook Live, where residents can comment in real-time.
What else would you like voters to know?
Through my involvement with the local public schools, I will bring a fresh perspective to City Council, which will help the City spread the message of how great our schools are to those considering moving away or hesitant to come here.
