ATLANTA — The sale and proposed redevelopment of Underground Atlanta leaves Atlanta’s famed New Year’s Eve Peach Drop “without a home or a backer,” a former Fulton County commissioner wrote in an Atlanta Business Chronicle op-ed.
“Please don’t misunderstand me: I am a huge fan of progress. I am proud of the city Atlanta has become,” Robb Pitts wrote. “But with every local tradition that we allow to die, we lose a piece of our local identity. We lose a sense of where we came from. We lose a piece of who we are.”
The city of Atlanta agreed in December 2014 to sell Underground Atlanta to a South Carolina-based real estate investment company for $25.8 million. The sale was to close on Sept. 30, but has been pushed back until January 2016, WABE-FM reported.
