Field goal in closing seconds lifts Denison to victory over Ohio Wesleyan

Matt Puracchio booted a 25-yard field goal with five seconds remaining in regulation to lift Denison to a 34-31 victory over rival Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday.

The game-winning kick was Puracchio’s second field goal of the quarter. He tied the game at 31 with a 37-yard field goal with 5:31 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Big Red took a 28-17 lead into halftime, but the Battling Bishops responded with a pair of third quarter touchdowns to take a 31-28 lead and pave the way for Puracchio’s heorics.

Denison dominated the time of possession game, holding the ball for 40:10 to Ohio Wesleyan’s 19:50.

Denison’s Brandon Sklenar completed 31 of 45 passes for 384 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His 384 yards is the third-highest single-game total in Denison football history.

Meanwhile, DuShawn Brown had 11 receptions for 225 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Brown’s 225 receiving yards were the second most for a Big Red receiver in a single game.

Denison (2-2) travels to DePauw (2-1) next weekend. Ohio Wesleyan (2-1)  travels to Allegheny (1-2).
