Georgia Senate Race: Headed to a Runoff?

ATLANTA, Nov. 3, 2008 — The Libertarian candidate in a Georgia Senate race says it would be a shot heard around the world, but his presence in the race could lead to a runoff between the incumbent Republican and a Democrat once considered to be a longshot for the seat.

At an Atlanta Press Club debate yesterday, Libertarian Allen Buckley called Sen. Saxby Chambliss a “spendaholic.”  Buckley is polling at about four percent of the vote, and since a candidate needs 50 percent of the vote plus one to win the race, Chambliss could head to a runoff with Democrat Jim Martin.

If there is a runoff, Democrats, looking for a filibuster-proof 60 seats in the Senate, could turn their post-Nov. 4 attention to this Georgia race.
