Japan saw a record number of visitors in 2016, according to numbers from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO).

The country saw a total of 24.04 million people visit the country, the largest on record since JNTO started to keep the statistics in 1964. Over the last three years, the number of visitors has grown 2.4 times.

Officials said more international conferences and events held in Japan and continuous promotional activities to attract tourists led to the increase.
