Attraction Type: Cemetery

The cemetery is home to the oldest running Confederate Memorial Day celebration, also known as “Decoration Day.” The celebration started in 1865.

Milton C. Lively donated land for the cemetery around the time the city was established in 1870, naming the road leading to Cemetery Street. Initially, two streets connected the town to the cemetery: North Cemetery Street and South Cemetery Street. After Buford Highway was built in the 1930s, South Cemetery Street was renamed Carlyle Street; the portion of North Cemetery Street west of Buford Highway became Holcomb Bridge Road in 2012. The Old Colony Burying Ground was established in 1805 and is the final resting place of many early Granville pioneers. The first burial was in 1806, and the oldest surviving gravestone is dated 1808. It is the resting place for veterans from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War, along with ministers, farmers, industrialists, physicians, mothers, children, and other citizens of Granville.
