Lake Eola Park

Overview

Lake Eola Park is a public park in downtown Orlando, Florida, centered on the 23-acre Lake Eola. A roughly 0.9-mile path surrounds the lake, which is formed by a sinkhole. The park traces its origins to 1883, when Orlando resident Jacob Summerlin donated land around the lake to the city on the condition that it be beautified, planted with trees and surrounded by a roadway.

The park was informally established in 1888 and officially designated in 1892. Over the years, the property has included a zoo, horse racing track, tennis courts, dance pier and radio broadcasting facilities. A fountain was installed in Lake Eola in 1912. The present fountain was installed in 1957 and renamed for Linton E. Allen in 1966. Lake Eola Park was expanded in 1993 after a section of Washington Street was closed and incorporated into the park.
