Plasa Bieu

Overview

Plasa Bieu, meaning “Old Market” in Papiamentu, is a traditional food market in Willemstad, Curaçao. Also known as Marshe Bieu, it consists of independently operated food stands serving local Curaçaoan dishes in an informal, open-air setting.

The market is primarily a lunch destination and offers dishes reflecting the African, European and Caribbean influences on Curaçaoan cuisine. Common offerings include freshly caught fish, okra soup and goat stew. Customers order from individual vendors and eat at shared tables and counters on a first-come, first-served basis. Small paintings depicting traditional rural life decorate the vents above the cooking areas.
