United 767 struck light pole on approach to Newark, NTSB says

A United Airlines Boeing 767 struck a light pole along the New Jersey Turnpike while on final approach to Newark Liberty International Airport last month, according to a preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board.

The incident occurred at about 1:50 p.m. on May 3, as United Airlines Flight 169, a Boeing 767-424ER registered as N77066, was approaching Runway 29 at Newark. The flight was operating as a scheduled international passenger service from Venice Marco Polo Airport in Italy to Newark.

The NTSB said the aircraft struck a light pole during final approach. Debris from the pole then hit a tractor-trailer traveling southbound on the New Jersey Turnpike.

The airplane landed and taxied to the gate without further incident. The three flight crew members, eight cabin crew members and 220 passengers deplaned at the gate without injury, according to the NTSB.

The tractor-trailer driver sustained minor injuries. The aircraft sustained substantial damage.

The NTSB said the investigation includes participation from the Federal Aviation Administration, United Airlines, the Air Line Pilots Association and Boeing.

The agency’s findings remain preliminary, and the cause of the incident has not yet been determined.
