ATLANTA — SkyView Atlanta, a prominent feature of the downtown skyline, is temporarily closed as it undergoes a comprehensive maintenance and repair process after an assessment determined the observation wheel’s main axle was likely struck by lightning.
SkyView Atlanta said the axle must be removed and repaired to ensure continued safe operation. The work requires a full dismantling of the 200-foot-tall wheel, including removal of the ring beams and spokes, so the axle can be transported to specialists in Warrenton, Missouri, for repair.
Once the axle is rebuilt, the wheel will be reassembled and returned to service.
The company described the project as a carefully planned, routine safety measure designed to uphold high standards of reliability, performance, and guest safety. Dismantling began Monday, Jan. 12, and SkyView Atlanta is expected to reopen Feb. 12.
Opened in July 2013, the observation wheel is located near The Tabernacle and sits on a parking lot owned by the venue, a former church that now hosts concerts and events. SkyView Atlanta is similar in design to large observation wheels found in other cities, including the London Eye.
SkyView Atlanta operators said updates on the repair process and reopening timeline will be shared as work progresses.
