Homelessness has been growing in cities nationwide, and now, one Georgia city has formed a task force to tackle the subject.
Earlier this month, the Norcross City Council agreed to create the homeless task force, WSB-TV reported. According to the station, the city’s mayor, Craig Newton, said a resident reached out following an interaction with a homeless person inside the Gwinnett County Library’s Norcross branch.
“It’s a challenge that demands our immediate attention,” the station quoted Newton as saying. “Not only that but our compassion.”
An audit released earlier this year suggested Georgia lawmakers explore establishing a statewide council if they want a more coordinated approach to address homelessness, a new audit found. The audit, conducted as part of Senate Bill 62 that state lawmakers passed last year, concluded that the feds awarded “significant” money for homeless programs and services, but the “state lacks a coordinated response to homelessness.”
