The “Memorial to The Six Million” at Atlanta’s Greenwood Cemetery was completed in 1965. It was the second Holocaust memorial built in the United States. Architect Benjamin Hirsch, a child survivor of the Holocaust, designed the memorial, which was funded by members of Eternal Life-Hemshech, founded in 1964 by a group of Holocaust survivors.

It’s a powerful reminder of one of the darkest moments in history. In 2008, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

“For those born after the war or for future generations, the monument should stimulate inquiry into this event, which very likely by then will be minimized in the pages of history,” Hirsch said, in part, in describing the memorial, according to a National Register of Historic Places document.
