There were no changes in the top 10 of the American Football Coaches Association Division III poll this week with the University of Mount Union (4-0) retaining the top spot.
The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (5-0) placed No. 2, while Linfield College (4-0) stayed put at No. 3. North Central College (4-0), Hobart College (4-0), the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (4-0), University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (4-0), Bethel (4-0), University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (4-0) and Heidelberg University (4-0) rounded out the top 10.
Linfield earned its position following a big 29-0 win this past weekend over No. 15 Pacific Lutheran University, the pollsters said.
In Ada, Ohio, Kevin Burke threw for 304 yards and four touchdowns as Mount Union (4-0) steamrolled Ohio Northern University (2-2), 58-7. Mount Union’s running backs compiled 322 yards and three touchdowns on the afternoon.
In other action, Denison University improved to 4-1 for the first time since 1986 after it knocked off DePauw University, 42-21 at Deeds-Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.
Denison’s Brandon Sklenar threw for 292 yards and four touchdowns and also rushed for a pair of touchdowns in the win. DuShawn Brown was Sklenar’s favorite target on the afternoon, hauling in five passes for 93 yards and a touchdown.
DePauw (0-4) jumped out to a 14-7 first quarter lead, but the Denison Big Red (4-1) turned the tables with a 21-point third quarter. Saturday’s matchup, during Denison’s annual Big Red Weekend, marked the seventh contest between the schools; Denison holds a 5-2 advantage against the Tigers.
In St. Louis, Zach Lonneman rushed for 148 yards and a touchdown and Eric Daginella threw for 127 yards and a touchdown to lead Washington University (3-2) to victory over Berry College (1-4) by a 44-7 margin before a crowd of 786 at Francis Field.
After a scoreless first quarter, Washington’s offense notched a pair of rushing touchdowns in the second quarter while the Bears’ defense contributed a safety to give the Bears a 16-0 halftime lead. In all, Washington ran for a season-high 276 yards on the afternoon as the Bears dominated the time of possession battle by a 2-1 margin.
Down 44-0, Berry’s Dale Jackson, making his first start of the season, connected with Will Chomskis for a 37-yard touchdown with 5:14 remaining in the fourth quarter to put the Vikings on the board. Jackson completed nine of 14 passes for 113 yards and the touchdown while Jonathan Lewis led Berry’s ground game with 43 rushing yards on 12 carries.
In Wooster, Ohio, Michael Putko threw for 206 yards and a touchdown while Mason Zurek rushed for 228 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Wabash College (4-0) cruised to victory over the College of Wooster (2-2), 48-14. Richard Barnes threw 306 yards for Wooster in the loss.
In Delaware, Ohio, Mason Espinosa threw for 368 yards and five touchdowns as Ohio Wesleyan University (3-1) knocked off Allegheny College (0-5), 50-7. Ohio Wesleyan was efficient, to say the least, as the Battling Bishops needed held the ball for just 20:17 to Allegheny’s 39:43.
In Jackson, Miss., Zak Thrasher threw for 177 yards and three touchdowns while Taz Watson ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns as Millsaps College (4-0) edged out Hendrix College (2-2) by a 48-37 margin. Seth Peters threw for 326 yards and five touchdowns in the loss.
In Ewing, N.J., The College of New Jersey (2-2) opened up New Jersey Athletic Conference play with a 21-16 win over Montclair State (1-4).
In Sewanee, Tenn., Sewanee: The University of the South (2-3) edged out Birmingham-Southern (3-2) University, 31-28.
In Rocky Mount, N.C., Graham Craig threw for 406 yards and four touchdowns to lead LaGrange College (2-2) to victory over North Carolina Wesleyan College (1-4), 50-26 margin.
In Maryville, Tenn., Evan Pittenger threw for 126 yards and a touchdown and also rushed for 53 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Maryville College (4-1) blanked Averett University (1-4) by a 48-0 score.
