Navy School slated for closure

The Navy Supply Corps School, a staple of Athens’ Normaltown community for more than 50 years, will close as a part of this year’s round of Base Realignment and Closures (BRAC), according to the office of U.S. Rep. John Barrow, D-Athens.

Since Jan. 15, 1954, the U.S. Navy Supply Corps School – which first opened in Washington in 1921 – has called Athens its most consistent home.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is expected to announce the Pentagon’s recommendations at 10:30 a.m. today in Washington, D.C.
