Georgia’s newest city, Dunwoody, officially began its operations today. The day was marked by a special midnight session of the city council in which a ceremonial ribbon cutting honored the occasion.

Centuries before Europeans came to Northwest Georgia, a number of Native American tribes inhabited the area. But, one particular tribe left its mark on the area by building ceremonial mounds that served as the centerpiece of their city.

The popular Tour de Georgia cycling race will not be held in 2009 because of a lack of corporate sponsors, officials said.
