Berry College returns home this week following a challenging three-game road trip that saw the Division III team face off against a Division I FCS squad from Mercer University. Playing in their inaugural season, it marked the first-ever road trip in program history. While the Vikings (1-4) lost all three games, the team is excited about returning home to take on Centre College (3-1).
Denison University improved to 4-1 for the first time since 1986 after it knocked off DePauw University, 42-21 at Deeds-Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.
Trailing Ohio Wesleyan University by seven, Denison University (3-1) engineered a huge fourth quarter comeback to force overtime and eventually upset the Battling Bishops 47-41 in double overtime before a crowd of 4,800 at Selby Stadium.
Berry College took a lead into halftime against Rhodes College thanks to a 47-yard touchdown run on a fake punt and a 100-yard fumble return for a touchdown. However, the visiting Vikings faltered in the second half, falling to the Lynx, 36-24, before a crowd of 2,198 at Crain Field.
Mercer University football fans are understandably excited about their team’s perfect start, but the true test for the Bears (3-0) begins this weekend when Drake University (1-2) comes to town.
In many ways, Berry College’s inaugural football season begins in earnest this week as the Vikings travel to Memphis, Tenn., to take on Rhodes College.
Mercer University relied on a strong running game and a stout defense during a rainy affair Saturday to defeat Berry College by a 43-0 margin to remain unbeaten.
