Federal money for streetcars formally presented

(Photo by Todd DeFeo) ATLANTA — Federal officials on Wednesday formally presented the city of Atlanta with $47.6 million to build a streetcar line. “The Atlanta streetcar project is a prime example of the kind of innovative, 21st century projects that will change the U.S. transportation landscape by strengthening the economy and creating jobs, reducing gridlock and providing safe, affordable and environmentally sustainable transportation choices,” U.S. Transportation Secretary LaHood said in a news release.

Officials decide to extend Ga. 400 toll

Highway 400 would cease in 2011, state authorities on Friday agreed to extend the toll for another decade, according to published reports. Zoo Atlanta gorilla charges, breaks glass barrier

ATLANTA – Zoo Atlanta’s Willie B. Conservation Center remains closed after a 20-year-old silver back gorilla charged a glass barrier, causing it to crack, officials said. Wreck on Interstate 20 closes highway

ATLANTA – A wreck on Interstate 20 west of Atlanta late Saturday night shut down the highway’s westbound lanes. The wreck also caused delays on southbound lanes of Interstate 285 near its interchange with the east-west road. The backup on both roads appeared to be causing other problems. “There were lots of other little wrecks” possibly resulting from the backup, one witness said. News/Talk 750 WSB reported the wreck involved a motorcycle and was fatal.
