Bank of America Plaza

The Bank of America Plaza, sometimes called the “Pencil Building” for its tall, slender spire, is a landmark skyscraper located between Midtown and Downtown Atlanta, Georgia.

Developed by Cousins Properties, designed by Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates LLC and completed in 1992, the tower stands at 1,023 feet, making it the tallest building in Georgia, the Southeastern United States, and the tallest in any U.S. state capital as of February 2024. It ranks as the 23rd tallest building in the United States.

Originally named NationsBank Plaza, the building was intended to serve as the headquarters for Citizens & Southern National Bank. However, during construction, C&S merged with Sovran Bank and was later taken over by NCNB, forming NationsBank.

The building features 55 stories of office space and was designed to symbolize Atlanta’s economic growth in the late 20th century. Its iconic silhouette remains a defining feature of the city’s skyline.
