Guidebooks are annoying. Just because some editor who doesn’t know me tells me which restaurant is the best or what attraction is a must-see doesn’t make it a must-see attraction. Sightseers’ Delight is dedicated to the weird, the quirky and the fun. After all, traveling is fun.

If it’s not, you’re doing it wrong.

All of the places highlighted in this ever-growing database are great. Sightseers’ Delight has visited them all. We think you should make a point to see every one of them. But, this is not a guidebook. Just a webpage to help you plan your next adventure.

Today, the Earnslaw carries tourist passengers across Lake Wakatipu from Queenstown to Walter Peak High Country Farm. During the 1.5-hour cruise, travelers can view the steam engine and watch stokers feed coal.

Ty Cobb has a tough legacy, to say the least. He is one of the greatest players to ever take the field. He holds the all-time career batting average record with a .366 average, and he was selected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936 as part of the inaugural class. The Ty Cobb Museum in his hometown of Royston, Ga., puts Cobb in an interesting light. The museum helps tell the story of Cobb and how he helped shape his home town, an impact that is felt even today.

Urquhart Castle
Type of Attraction
Description

Urquhart Castle, located on a headland overlooking Loch Ness 13 miles southwest of Inverness, is home to ruins that date back to the 13th to the 16th centuries. It was built on an early medieval fortification site and was critical in the Wars of Scottish Independence during the 14th century. Throughout history, it was raided on several occasions by the MacDonald Earls of Ross and was subsequently granted to the Clan Grant in 1509. Despite additional raids, the castle was strengthened, only to be mostly abandoned by the middle of the 17th century. In the 20th century, it became a scheduled monument placed in state care and opened to the public. Today, Urquhart Castle is one of the largest castles in Scotland and one of the country’s most-visited historical sites.

Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
Type of Attraction
Description

When it opened in 1964, the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge (previously misspelled as the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge) was the world’s longest suspension span. The bridge was named after Giovanni da Verrazano. In 1524, he became the first European explorer to sail into New York Harbor. Its 693-foot-tall towers are 1 5/8 inches farther apart at their tops than at their bases because the 4,260-foot-long required engineers to take into the account curvature of the Earth. Each tower weighs 27,000 tons and is held together with three million rivets and one million bolts. Seasonal contractions and expansions of the steel cables cause the double-decked roadway to be 12 feet lower in the summer than in the winter.
