Clifford’s Tower

Overview

Clifford’s Tower is the largest surviving portion of York Castle, a medieval fortress in York, England. The tower stands atop a steep mound and provides panoramic views across the city from a modern timber roof platform.

The site is associated with several significant episodes in York’s history. These include the Harrying of the North following the Norman Conquest and the 1190 massacre of York’s Jewish community, when members of the community sought refuge within the castle before their deaths. The tower also survived a major fire in 1684.
