(SmyrnaVinings.News) — One person died, and others were injured in an incident at Six Flags Over Georgia, according to Cobb County Commission Chairwoman Lisa Cupid.
Cobb County police responded immediately, and detectives with the department’s Major Crimes Unit are investigating the circumstances, Cupid said in a statement.
She said she understood that the deceased person’s relatives had been notified. Law enforcement will release additional information as it is confirmed.
The investigation: Cobb County is working closely with Six Flags Over Georgia and other partners as investigators examine what happened.
Cupid’s statement did not describe the incident, but reports indicate someone fell from the Goliath roller coaster. It also did not provide information about the injured people’s conditions or identify those involved or specify how many people were injured.
The response: Cupid expressed condolences to the family of the person who died and concern for those injured, park visitors and employees.
“I cannot imagine the horror the patrons and employees witnessed today, and my heart aches for the family who lost a loved one,” she said.
She asked the community to keep the deceased person’s family, those injured, and the park’s employees and leadership in their thoughts.
The community impact: Cupid described Six Flags Over Georgia as a significant part of the county’s tourism landscape, attracting visitors from Cobb County, across Georgia and throughout the Southeast.
She said the community was grappling with how such a devastating incident could happen at a place that has provided generations of families with happy memories.
