SAS plans up to 40 Airbus widebodies in largest investment in airline’s history

SAS recently announced the largest investment in its history, with plans for up to 40 Airbus widebody aircraft as the airline looks to expand long-haul flying and strengthen Scandinavia’s connections to global markets.

The investment includes new Airbus A330-900neo aircraft and additional Airbus A330-300 aircraft to support near-term growth before the new fleet arrives. SAS said the Airbus order is the highest-value aircraft order the airline has placed, with a total list price of more than $10 billion.

The widebody investment follows SAS’ order last year for 55 Embraer E195-E2 regional aircraft and comes as the airline continues renewing its Airbus A320neo fleet. Together, the orders represent one of the most significant fleet modernization efforts in the company’s history.

SAS, which joined SkyTeam in September 2024, said the new aircraft will support the continued development of its long-haul network, with Copenhagen Airport serving as the carrier’s global hub. The airline said the additional capacity will help connect Scandinavia with markets in Europe, North America, Asia and beyond.
