Georgia officials begin another highway project, this time on State Route 400

Construction has started on the State Route 400 Express Lanes, Georgia’s largest-ever transportation project, set to transform travel along one of metro Atlanta’s busiest corridors.

Major construction activities are underway in Fulton and Forsyth counties, marking an important milestone in delivering new travel options for drivers and transit riders along one of metro Atlanta’s busiest corridors.

A public-private partnership with SR 400 Peach Partners, LLC, will design, build, finance, operate, and maintain the lanes for 55 years. Officials touted that the approach should leverage private investment to accelerate construction and reduce costs.

A nearly $3.9 billion federal loan supports construction and minimizes the need for state funds, helping Georgia deliver the project more quickly and safely. Once complete, the SR 400 Express Lanes will anchor the Georgia Express Lanes network, improving reliability, connectivity, and transit access for decades.

The 16-mile project will add optional, dynamically priced express lanes in both directions — from North Springs MARTA to north of McFarland Parkway — keeping traffic moving up to 30% faster than general lanes.

Digital signs will show real-time toll rates, while all general-purpose lanes remain free. Peach Pass and approved transponders will grant access, just like other Georgia express lanes.

The project also advances transit by providing toll-free access for MARTA’s future bus rapid transit, with planned stations at Holcomb Bridge Road, North Point Mall, and Windward Park & Riearlyarlyde.

The SR 400 Express Lanes will be part of the larger Georgia Express Lanes Network, connecting more communities across the region and helping motorists and transit riders enjoy more reliable and predictable trip times. Construction will continue through 2031, with most disruptive work scheduled overnight to minimize daytime impacts.
