From city cell to county block: Smyrna officials vote for a jailbreak

SMYRNA, Georgia — Smyrna is getting out of the city-jail business — finally.

The City Council voted 7-0 to close Smyrna’s jail, the last municipal jail still operating in Cobb County. Under the plan, current and future Smyrna inmates will be housed at the Cobb County Detention Center under an intergovernmental agreement with the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office and the Cobb County Board of Commissioners.

City officials said they analyzed the costs and logistics and concluded it made more sense to shift inmate housing to the county, following the model other Cobb County cities already use. In other words, Smyrna is the last one turning out the lights.

The city said it will work on a plan to repurpose the existing jail facility. Council members briefly credited staff and the police department for the “deep dive” on cost and execution, then moved quickly to a vote.

No questions. No debate. A motion, a second, and a unanimous vote — and just like that, the last city jail in Cobb County is on its way out.
