A Georgia state senator has introduced legislation to bar the state from using artificial intelligence associated with the People’s Republic of China.
Senate Bill 104 would prevent any agency affiliated with the State of Georgia from installing or implementing an AI system on state equipment if the Chinese government owns or operates the AI company.
“The United States is seeing an unprecedented incursion into our citizens’ data by foreign adversaries,” state Sen. Jason Anavitarte (R–Dallas, said in a statement. “With so many data breaches attributed to China in particular, they should never have access to the private information of our state government or Georgia citizens. To ensure our collective security, we must protect our data and prevent foreign entities from interfering with the equipment we use daily as representatives of the People.”
SB 104 responds to recent foreign policy concerns about the Chinese government accessing U.S. data through its affiliated companies. It would enable state organizations to secure sensitive information from potential foreign involvement as AI technology is further developed.
