Smyrna, Georgia, to pay firm nearly $200,000 to update master plan

SMYRNA, Georgia — Officials here are expected to authorize $199,366 for MKSK to update and expand the city’s master plan.

According to Smyrna city council documents, the money will be paid from the city’s General Fund. The action, which the council is expected to approve on Monday, would authorize the city’s mayor to sign and execute all related documents.

In mid-May, the city issued a request for proposals from firms to provide an update and expansion to the Smyrna B.O.L.D Downtown Master Plan.

The city received proposals by the July 12, 2024, deadline, and Economic Development, Parks and Recreation, Community Development, Public Works and Community Relations staff and selected Smyrna residents selected five firms for presentation/interviews and the final evaluation.

Last month, the city closed on its $15.8 million deal to buy the nine-acre Smyrna First Baptist Church property in the heart of the city. The church plans to develop a new campus on a nearby 5.5-acre site on Atlanta Road.

Under a sale-leaseback agreement, Smyrna First Baptist Church will continue ministering in its existing space for two years as construction begins at its new location. The city plans a “Downtown the Downtown” campaign to revitalize the site.

Elsewhere in the downtown area, city officials opted to terminate a contract to build a surface parking lot near downtown, documents indicate.

The city inked a deal with Marietta-based CSTE on Aug. 12 to construct a 44-space surface parking lot at 2688 Atlanta Road. However, officials decided to nix the deal “due to the unanticipated conditions we have encountered with this project.”
