FBI leading probe into New Orleans terrorist attack

The FBI is leading the investigation into “an act of terrorism” in New Orleans that left 10 people dead and injured nearly three dozen more.

At about 3:17 a.m., New Orleans police responded to a report of a vehicle that drove into a crowd of pedestrians in the 300 block of Bourbon Street near the intersection with Canal Street. Authorities said the vehicle struck a construction vehicle, and after the vehicle came to a stop, the suspect reportedly opened fire on responding officers.

“Many of us woke up this morning to devastating news of the brutal intentional slaughter of innocent people celebrating the New Year in New Orleans,” Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said in a post to X. “I’m praying for the victims and their families and will ensure they get justice for this appalling act. Please avoid the immediate area at this time and listen to the law enforcement officers who are still on the scene.”

Officers returned fire, and the victim was struck and subsequently declared dead on the scene. Two officers were struck and injured in the exchange, and both were transported via EMS to a local hospital and were last listed in stable condition.

According to Newsweek, the FBI is investigating an improvised explosive device (IED) that was found at the scene of the incident, which has been confirmed to be “a viable bomb.”

Authorities said today’s Sugar Bowl will proceed as scheduled.
