Outgoing President Joe Biden pardoned the controversial former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases during President Donald Trump’s first term.
Anthony Fauci, who pushed for social distancing and lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic, was one of the lead White House Coronavirus Task Force members under Trump. He frequently contradicted Trump, and some supporters alleged that the doctor was attempting to politically sabotage Trump’s 2020 reelection bid.
Following Trump, Fauci was Biden’s chief medical advisor until he retired in 2022.
“For more than half a century, Dr. Fauci served our country,” Biden said in a statement. “He saved countless lives by managing the government’s response to pressing health crises, including HIV/AIDS, as well as the Ebola and Zika viruses. During his tenure as my Chief Medical Advisor, he helped the country tackle a once-in-a-century pandemic. The United States is safer and healthier because of him.”
Biden also pardoned Gen. Mark A. Milley and the members and staff of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol.
