Athens’ Akins Ford Arena opening delayed due to lack of certificate of occupancy

The opening of Akins Ford Arena in Athens, Georgia, has been delayed after it didn’t receive a certificate of occupancy.

“Unfortunately, despite successfully completing approvals from the planning department, the state elevator inspector, and local health inspectors and passing the smoke control test, the contractors were unable to deliver a fully operational fire panel,” the Classic Center said in a statement. “Without this critical element, the Fire Marshal could not issue a certificate of occupancy, and we are unable to open the facility safely.”

The Rock Lobster hockey games scheduled for Friday, Dec. 6, and Saturday, Dec. 7, will be rescheduled. The Black Tie Gala on Sunday, December 8, will also be postponed.

“We know this news is disappointing, but our fan and staff safety is the first priority,” the Classic Center added.
