Smyrna, Georgia, looks to nix deal for parking lot

SMYRNA, Georgia — City officials are set to consider a measure to terminate a contract to build a surface parking lot near downtown, documents indicate.

The city inked a deal with Marietta-based CSTE on Aug. 12 to construct a 44-space surface parking lot at 2688 Atlanta Road. On Monday, the city council is poised to cancel the contract.

“The City of Smyrna requests to terminate the contract due to the unanticipated conditions we have encountered with this project to construct a 44-space surface parking lot at 2688 Atlanta Road,” according to a city council issue sheet. “The scope of work includes the demolition of the existing parking area and building foundation, grading, sanitary sewer, potable water, curb and gutter, asphalt paving, parking lot lighting, storm sewer piping, and detention.”

City officials originally planned to build a 173-space parking deck but shifted their plans amid rising costs. Officials indicated the deck could have cost $7 million, or about $40,000 per space.
