Alabama man sentenced for threatening Fulton County sheriff, district attorney

U.S. District Judge U.S. District Judge J. P. Boulee sentenced an Alabama man to one year and nine months in prison for threatening the sheriff and district attorney of Fulton County, Georgia, amid the 2020 election interference probe of former President Donald Trump.

Arthur Ray Hanson, II, 59, of Huntsville, Alabama, pleaded guilty in July to one count of transmitting interstate threats. He also faces three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay a $7,500 fine.

Federal prosecutors allege Hanson threatened to injure Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis because of their connections to the Fulton County, Georgia, investigation and prosecution of former President Donald Trump.

According to U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan and court filings, on Aug. 6, 2023, Hanson called the Fulton County Government customer service line twice and left two voicemails—the first for Labat and the second for Willis. Prosecutors say Hanson threatened violence against the officials during both calls.
