News of Note

IN THE MONEY: U.S. scheduled passenger airlines reported a second-quarter 2024 after-tax net gain of $3.8 billion and a pre-tax operating gain of $6.3 billion, according to quarterly reports filed quarterly with the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Last year, airlines reported an after-tax net gain of $5.4 billion and a pre-tax operating gain of $7.7 billion.

COMPLAINTS EVERYWHERE: Over the past three years, complaints made up an average of 91% of consumer submissions, according to U.S. Department of Transportation data on the submissions it has received from consumers about air travel between January and May. The feds said the Air Travel Consumer Report data release was delayed because of the tens of thousands of complaints received against airlines and ticket agents the Office of Aviation Consumer Protection received and the time needed to review and process the complaints.

NEW HUB: SAS announced an extensive expansion from Copenhagen starting with the summer traffic program for 2025, announcing 15 new routes from Copenhagen, including a new long-haul route to Seattle. Adding several new direct flights from Copenhagen to popular European and Intercontinental destinations will support greater growth for both SAS and Scandinavia as a global hub.

TRAVEL ADVISORY: New Jersey Sen. John Burzichelli, D-Gloucester/Salem/Cumberland, introduced legislation to establish a Reproductive Health Travel Advisory to inform New Jersey residents about restrictions on reproductive health care in other states.

NEW DISPLAY: The National Archives will add the 19th Amendment, which removed restrictions for women to vote, to the permanent display of the Charters of Freedom in the Rotunda of the National Archives Building in Washington in March 2026, Archivist of the United States Colleen Shogan announced.
